A Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home lists for sale near NYC

by Verus Real Estate

A well-known American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, designed more than 1,000 homes, and one of them is available for purchase. The rare opportunity to buy a Wright-designed house recently emerged in the Hudson Valley. This 2,620-square-feet property went up for sale, asking $1.525 million.

The restored 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home sits on 2.5 acres within Clausland Mountain Park. Known as Socrates Zaferiou House, this property is one of Wright's last works. The architect began to design this project in the mid-1950s but passed away in 1959 before the house was completed. According to Bloomberg, the home got its name after the first owner – Socrates Zaferiou, who kept all of Wright's drawings and notes regarding the design of this estate.

The Socrates Zaferiou House sits among soaring trees in Blauvelt, New York, just half an hour away from midtown Manhattan. The home has an L-shaped layout, well-preserved authentic details, and an extra bedroom. When Zaferiou wrote to Frank Lloyd Wright and requested a house, the famous architect replied that he would not build it on such a small site. The first owner later acquired an additional plot of land and asked Wright to add a fourth bedroom and walk-out basement.

This Usonian-style house is one of the prime examples of architecturally significant prefab homes. It has tall ceilings, oversized windows, and Wright's trademark red flooring. The spacious living room serves as an ideal place for social gatherings. It includes a massive fireplace and a couch designed by Wright himself.

So far, this property has had only two owners. Sarah Anderson-Magness purchased the house from Mr. Zaferiou in 2014 and meticulously restored some of its elements. However, most of the home details remained untouched since its construction, which means it might require some small changes.

“The story behind this house is unique in that I purchased it from the original owners,” Sarah Anderson-Magness explained in the video. "It’s a complete escape from our New York City life, so it’s meant to be a decompression.”
