How will Gowanus rezoning impact the neighborhood and New York City?

by Verus Real Estate

The New York City Council approved de Blasio’s Gowanus rezoning. The project’s goal is to expand access to affordable housing, jobs, and open space. Gowanus rezoning will bring 8,500 new residential units to the neighborhood, including 3,000 affordable. It covers 80 blocks and extends beyond Gowanus.

The rezoning plan has encountered resistance from the neighborhood groups due to environmental concerns. According to the Voices of Gowanus website, the Gowanus Canal is polluted with industrial runoff. Local groups are also worried about the possible sewage overflow once the new residents move into the neighborhood.

The Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice required new development to help clean the Canal. The coalition is planning to oversee this project. The proposal to rezone Gowanus had to wait more than a decade and undergo several changes before it was approved. Mayor Bill de Blasio committed to rezone neighborhoods during his election campaign in 2013 and his two terms in office.
