New York City opens its first net-zero energy library

by Verus Real Estate

The city’s first net-zero energy public library opened on Staten Island. The 10,000-square-foot building is located at 225 Bricktown Way. The new branch features solar panels on the roof, which provide nearly 100 percent of the energy for the building. The Charleston Library also has enhanced insulation and low-energy lighting, 6sqft reports

The $17-million eco-friendly library was designed by five architects. According to the press release, the project was managed by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), which works with communities and develops sustainable facilities. The new branch offers programs and dedicated spaces for infants, kids, teens, and adults.

As we recover from the pandemic and drive economic recovery, the educational and small business resources available at your local library branch are more important than ever,” NYCEDC tweeted

According to the definition provided by the Office of Energy Efficient and Renewable Energy, net-zero buildings are capable of producing enough renewable energy to meet their annual energy consumption needs. The Charleston Library is the second new branch that opened on Staten Island in the past 10 years.

"This library is a model for what we can do to eliminate emissions from public buildings and help fight the climate crisis," said NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Dawn M. Pinnock at the opening ceremony. "DCAS is proud to have provided funding and technical expertise to make this the first net-zero energy library in New York City."
