The largest private castle in Provence, France, is on the market for €18 million

by Verus Real Estate

France is home to over 45,000 castles and palaces, with some dating back to as early as the ninth century. French castles, which are commonly referred to as châteaux, have a remarkable history and heritage. Those in the market for a European estate have an opportunity to purchase the largest castle in Provence, a sunny region in the south of France.

The magnificent property, known as Château De La Verdière, spans 54,000 square feet and has 120 rooms. The historic castle sits at the top of the hill in the village of La Verdière, less than 80 minutes from Saint Tropez and Cannes. Built in 980, the impressive château is available for €18 million (USD 19,862,100).

The French mansion has 25 bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom, multiple kitchens, living rooms, libraries, reception rooms, and lounges. Although Château De La Verdière has over a thousand-year history, it still provides its residents with all the comforts of the twenty-first century. The current owner has spent over 15 years renovating this property.

“No other castle has been meticulously restored over years to achieve a modern marvel with original history and charm,” Todd Herlin, one of the listing agents, told Architectural Digest. “The current owner spent over 15 years meticulously restoring the property to its original spirit and grandeur, adorned with period paintings, tapestries, and fine furnishings.”

The outdoor area of Château De La Verdière is truly impressive. The 16-hectare park, which surrounds the mansion, includes two swimming pools, an Olympic-sized equestrian arena, multiple gardens, fountains, statues, and rare tree species. In addition, the future owner will also acquire 2.5 acres of oil-producing olive trees for personal consumption.

This charming castle offers panoramic views of the valley thanks to its location. In 1986, the château and its surrounding area were classified as historic monuments. Although the property is currently configured as a private residence, the listing suggests that it may also be transformed into a hotel with its own park. The castle has enough space for 25 additional rooms.
