This 18th-century New York home is for sale with its own post office

by Verus Real Estate

This upstate New York cottage has many stories to tell. It was built in 1795 on the river waterfront in Greenwich, New York, just across the road from the childhood home of Susan B. Anthony, a pioneer of the women’s suffrage movement. Throughout its long history, this house made a debut in The Horse Whisperer, a movie starring Scarlett Johanson and Robert Redford, and got featured in a book, A Simpler Way of Life.

Today, more than two centuries later, the Thomas McLean house hit the sales market for $675,000. It has 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and many antique details, such as the Dutch-style front door, four fireplaces with vintage mantels, wooden flooring with signs of wear, and doors with Norfolk hinges. The interior space totals almost 4,000 square feet.

The future owner will have a rare opportunity to enjoy the walks around tall green trees and views of the Battenkill River. The nature-surrounded homes, such as this one, use large windows to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere and allow you to admire the beautiful landscape. This house also appears on the National Register of Historic Places, which includes sites and buildings deemed worthy of preservation.

In addition to the main house, the sale also includes the first post office in Battenville. According to CIRCA Old Houses, it was founded in 1829 by the father of Susan B. Anthony, Daniel Anthony. The original post office could make the perfect guest house or an art studio. It has a small kitchen and a fully finished basement.

This historic property has an amazing location. It sits only 30 minutes away from Saratoga Springs and 1.5 hours away from Killington, Okemo, and Stratton ski resorts. If you wish to drive to New York City, it will take 3.5 hours to get there. For the past 50 years, the Thomas McLean house has been in the hands of artists Robert Nunnelly and Gerald Coble. They bought the abandoned estate and meticulously worked on preserving this unique property.
