This Queens neighborhood saw the most interest from NYC renters

by Verus Real Estate

New York City has more than 250 neighborhoods, each with its own history and culture. From the affluent Upper West Side to up-and-coming Turtle Bay, New York City has something for every preference and lifestyle. However, this variety of options makes it difficult to decide where to settle. To help New Yorkers narrow their search, RentHop released a list of the top 10 hottest neighborhoods for renters right now.

In its latest report, the real estate listing website analyzed every renter neighborhood search between February 1, 2023, and April 30, 2023, and compared it to the same period in 2022. In addition, RentHop also excluded all the traffic coming outside of New York City to ensure accuracy. The company found that the most searched-for NYC neighborhood is Astoria, Queens.

This Queens neighborhood jumped 8 spots in one year and ranked as the No.1 most in-demand NYC neighborhood among prospective renters. As NYC rents continue to break records, New Yorkers are looking for more affordable options in the outer boroughs. The median rent for an apartment in Astoria is $2,650, according to StreetEasy. In addition to relatively low prices, Astoria also attracts New Yorkers with its waterfront views and tree-lined streets.

Following Astoria, the Upper East Side secured second place, and the East Village rounded the top three list of the hottest NYC neighborhoods for renters. NYC renters were also searching for apartments in northern Brooklyn. Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Greenpoint all saw a spike in renters' interest. Meanwhile, the traditionally-popular East Village, Upper West Side, Greenwich Village, and Chelsea experience a drop in demand.

“The most interesting trend of this year’s hottest neighborhoods list is the continued rise of Northern Brooklyn,” the report reads. “Bed-Stuy is now the 4th most searched neighborhood for renters, Williamsburg is 6th, Bushwick is 7th, and Greenpoint took 14th. All four of these neighborhoods rose considerably in popularity since last year, with high rent prices and competition following as a result.”
