This hotel room in Sweden is surrounded by 350 birdhouses

by Verus Real Estate

Located among the trees of Swedish Lapland, this unique hotel room invites guests of all kinds – humans and birds. By wrapping the rooms in birdhouses, the hotel aims to preserve the declining bird population and provide visitors with an opportunity to enjoy birdwatching.

Inside, you will find a large bedroom with panoramic views, a double-height living space, a shower room, and a sauna. All interiors are painted in dark colors and incorporate organic materials. The project was created in partnership with Danish architecture studio BIG, the Treehotel, and Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman.

"I got to spend a few days and nights in some of the Treehotel's rooms right before the pandemic and left with a sense of rejuvenation from a complete immersion in nature," said BIG Founder Bjarke Ingels. "I couldn’t help wondering if there was a way to take the immersion one step further, and almost instantly the idea of inviting not only the human visitors but also the resident bird and bat population to cohabit a spherical swarm of nests came to life."

Once you arrive at Treehotel, you will check-in at the reception in the guesthouse and then access your room via a suspended bridge. This room is called Biosphere. But the hotel offers many other rooms attached to the big pine trees 4-6 meters above the ground. According to the Treehotel, each room opens spectacular views of the Swedish forest and the Lule River.

The goal of this Swedish hotel is to provide high-standard accommodation while also creating a positive impact on the environment. Ornithologist Ulf Öhman, who participated in the development of Biosphere, told Dezeen that this project hopes to inspire guests to install birdhouses near their own homes. "An initiative from Treehotel to take such measures may inspire their visitors to do the same,” Öhman said.
